Zoological District

The Zoological District, made up of Jackson and Clay counties in Missouri, supports the Zoo through a 1/8-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2011 and paid by anyone, including residents and visitors, who make purchases in Jackson or Clay County.

Thank you, Jackson and Clay County residents!

This funding has allowed the Zoo to grow staff, complete maintenance projects, and improve the Zoo experience. Since the funding was approved, the Zoo has added or expanded several new habitats and amenities:

  • 2013: Helzberg Penguin Plaza
  • 2014: Tuxedo Grill
  • 2015: Orangutan Canopy
  • 2017: Billy Goats Gruff
  • 2018: Stingray Bay
  • 2019: Camel Feeding Deck & Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo
  • 2020: Elephant Expedition
  • 2022: Alligator Alley
  • 2023: Sobela Ocean Aquarium
  • Coming 2026: New Giraffe Complex
