Help save the planet one shovel full of Zoo Manoo at a time! Zoo Manoo is an all- purpose soil conditioner (composted animal manure) brought to you by the plant-eating animals at the Kansas City Zoo. Our spring compost sale will be Saturday, April 22 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the south end of the Cheetah Parking Lot. You can’t beat the price! The cost per pickup truck load is $20 for FOTZ Members and $25 for Non-Members. You can also pick up a bucket full for just 5 dollars.
What is Zoo Manoo exactly? Well it’s as simple as “what goes in, must come out.” Just ask our elephants! Each of our seven African elephants consumes 100-150 pounds of hay, grain and produce per day. That amounts to 2,000 pounds of elephant poo in the exhibit daily. All of our plant-eating animals produce about 90 tons of manure each year. In an effort to reduce waste, that manure is taken to our compost pad and over a year’s time, breaks down into nutrient-rich compost. As it cures, it loses its unpleasant odor so it looks and smells more like top soil than animal poop. Zoo Manoo diverts 75% of our animal waste, nearly 70 tons annually, from landfills since it is composted on-site. We host Zoo Manoo sales twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall but it’s available year-round by appointment.
Besides the re-purposing benefits to the environment, the benefits of compost in your garden are endless. It modifies temperature extremes, keeping your soil cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, utilizes rainfall more efficiently and allows plants to hold nutrients for a longer period of time. All of the Zoo’s plant and flower beds use Zoo Manoo.
Celebrate Earth Day and do your garden a favor by taking home Zoo Manoo.
