What is enrichment?
The Kansas City Zoo’s enrichment program provides the animal collection with structured, appropriate enrichment as a part of daily husbandry routines. Enrichment is just as essential to animal welfare as proper nutrition and veterinary care is to our animals. So what is enrichment and why is so important? Enrichment is frequently defined as an act which “improves the quality of” or “adds fullness or flavor to.” In the zoo setting the word enrichment is defined even further and includes concepts such as: providing opportunities to display behavior, allows animals some control and choice over their environment, and enhances their well-being. Enrichment is intended to improve the quality of life of an animal and the Kansas City Zoo’s enrichment program has a framework of principles that allows us to make the enrichment that we are giving to our animals as effective as possible. Red, White, and Zoo day, gives us the opportunity to educate and show our guests about enrichment, animal care, and to have a good time with the animals.
