The Wild at Heart tour is designed for groups with limited walking ability. We will use your small bus (and driver) to transport your group into the Zoo and out again, while choosing level paths for you to explore newer areas of the zoo on foot with your very own guide.
Available: 9:15 am-11:30 am, Monday through Thursday, Labor Day to Memorial Day ONLY.
The tour consists of the Discovery Barn: social animal groups and our amphibians, Penguins, & the Tropics: mixed species exhibits representing rain forests of South America, Africa and Asia & would take up to 2 hours. You will also get an opportunity to feed the goats, fallow deer or Koi. These locations comprise a total of approximately 1000 steps.
At the end of your tour, your group may choose from two options: (A) relax for the last portion of your tour at our new Tuxedo Grill restaurant, then board your bus by the Tropics building and be escorted out of the zoo, or (B) extend your tour by walking downhill to Polar Bear Passage, River Otters and Trumpeter Swans. This will bring you to the front of the Zoo, where your bus will be waiting to pick up your group. Choosing option B will add approximately 600 steps to your tour. Please let us know which option you prefer when you book your tour.
In order to accommodate your bus, the tour will start promptly by 9:15 am Monday-Thursday. This is the only time we can start this tour, due to pedestrian foot traffic.
This tour must be booked a minimum of 4 weeks in advance, beginning after Labor Day through the end of March, excluding Holidays, Fridays and weekends.
All buildings that you will be touring are climate-controlled and have handicapped- accessible restrooms.
The price is a flat $100 tour fee and is restricted to one small bus.
Your bus driver and each aide assisting a wheelchair guest may join the tour free of charge.
If you need wheelchairs, push wheelchairs are available for rental for $7.00 each.
