What better way to celebrate Mom than with a relaxing day at the Zoo? Moms will receive FREE admission on Sunday, May 14, but the treats don’t stop there. Mom will also receive a beautiful carnation thanks to our friends at Sun Fresh Market.
While Mom is being spoiled at the Zoo, she can also visit our doting animal moms. Visit gorilla mama Makari, and her daughter that turns two later this month. Stop by Orangutan Canopy to see Josie, and her adorable almost one-year-old son, Dusty. We also have a brand new mom, Ruby Sue, in our wallaby exhibit. A female wallaby joey was born in September but has just recently become visible, popping out of her mom’s pouch more frequently.
Like human moms, animal moms know a thing or two about dedication. The African Elephant takes pregnancy to epic proportions by carrying her calf for 22 months before delivering a 250-pound newborn. Orangutan moms wait eight years between births, the longest time between births of the Great Apes. That’s due to the dependency of orangutan babies, who won’t break physical contact with their mothers for the first four months of life. Orangutans also often breastfeed their young until they are five years old.
Give Mom a break and bring her to the Zoo for a wild time with her cubs!
