California Sea Lions

  • Range: Our species are native to the West coast of the United States.
  • Habitat: Not found more than 10 miles from the coast, and on numerous small islands.
  • Length: Males can reach 7 feet; females are 6 feet. Fur is short and dense.
  • Weight: Males, up to 600 pounds. Females, up to 200 pounds.
  • Diet: Fish, octopus and squid.
  • Behavior: Very agile in water. May remain underwater for up to 30 minutes. Excellent vision, but poor sense of smell. They are playful. Very intelligent, and communicate with a loud hoarse-sounding bark. Hind flipper can be rotated forward for walking on land. Move relatively well on land and enjoy sunning themselves on rocks and beaches. Fights may break out as bulls protect their cows and territories. They can jump 6 to 8 ft. out of the water to avoid predators such as killer whales.
  • Sea lions are on display even in the coldest weather, because sea lions develop a second layer of blubber to stay warm.
  • Location: Found at the Sea Lion Pool

At The Zoo

Our Sea Lions have a public training demonstration daily. Although entertaining, these responses are similar to their natural behavior, and are not special "tricks."
