Red Panda

  • Range: China, Burma, and Nepal
  • Habitat: Bamboo forests, often at high altitudes. They sleep in nests in trees which are built nightly of twigs and leaves.
  • Description: Body is 2 feet long; tail is 1 to 1 ½ feet long.
  • Weight: 6 ½ to 10 pounds.
  • Diet: Bamboo shoots, grass, roots, fruit and acorns. A small portion of the diet is composed of mice, birds and bird eggs.
  • Behavior: Most active at dawn and dusk. Seen in pairs of family groups. Usually spend days in trees, sleeping with its tails curled around their body or lying on a branch with legs dangling. Mild disposition, but if provoked, they will rear on their hind legs and hiss.
  • Location: The red pandas are along the Tiger Trail in the Australasia section of the Zoo (topside)

At The Zoo

The Zoo currently houses one male and one female red panda. They are on exhibit in air conditioning in the summer and outside during the cold winter months.
