Eastern Black Rhinoceros

  • Range: Eastern and southern Africa
  • Habitat: In the savannah, always near water
  • Height: 4 ½ to 5 ½ feet tall at the shoulder
  • Weight: 1,750 to 3,000 pounds.
  • Diet: Herbivorous, use their prehensile upper lip to grasp their food and strip leaves from branches.
  • Behavior: Solitary and territorial. Males tolerate each other, but hierarchy does exist and dominant males must be treated with respect. They wallow in the mud to protect themselves from insect bites and sunburn.
  • Location: The Rhino Exhibit can be found in Africa.

At The Zoo

Female Luyisa had youngster Layla on October 18, 2010.
She weighed only 80 pounds at birth, but now is the size of an automobile. The sire of the calf is Tucker.
We also are home to Werikhe and Imara for a total of five endangerd Black Rhinos.
Eastern Black rhinos are a critically endangered species. The total population is only about 600.
