Listen for the grunts, screams and yowls of our brand new lion-tailed macaques. A troop of five of these monkeys is now on exhibit in the refurbished former home of the tigers. These cheek-pouched lion-tailed macaques are one of the smallest and most endangered of the macaque species. Their name refers to the tip of their tails which somewhat resembles that of a lion's tail. See them in their new home on Tiger Trail.
Welcome Red River Hog Piglets
Our new Red River Hog Piglets are on exhibit. Three boys and one girl were born on March 13 and weighed just about 1.5 pounds at birth. Now nearly two months old, they are busy running all over their new home. The boys are named Pumpkin, Pi and Bond and the girl is Peaches. Come see them in the Congo section of Africa near the Gorillas.
Rare Amur Leopard Now On Exhibit A beautiful 10-year old female Amur Leopard is the newest addition to our African Congo section. There are only 38 out of 230 accredited AZA facilities in the United States that exhibit these rare and elusive cats. Amur Leopards are from Asia and are critically endangered. It is believed that fewer than 50 are still living in the wild. The Kansas City Zoo is honored to become a part of the Amur Leopard conservation efforts and welcome this beautiful girl. Come and meet her for yourself!

The March of the Penguins- Helzberg Penguin Plaza Coming this Fall
Construction began in September on the Helzberg Penguin Plaza and the dirt has been flying ever since. The project is going well and the exhibit is still on schedule to open in the Fall of 2013. Helzberg Penguin Plaza will feature a 100,000 gallon cool pool for cold water penguins laced with snow, and a 25,000 gallon warm wet area laced with sand for warm water penguins. Each exhibit provides magnificent views showcasing these extraordinary black and white birds in a recreated Southern Oceans environment. Watch the penguin exhibit video to see the official plans!

Living for months camped out near the Ade'lie Penguin colony at Cape Royds, Antartica, educator and penguin researcher Jean Pennycook has been studying the behavior of penguins as they come ashore, build their nests, lay eggs and raise their young. She also educates others about penguins and how changes to their environment may affect their lives. Thanks to the Zoo Learning Fund, Pennycook will be visiting us at the Kansas City Zoo this June. She will be interacting with the summer camp offererings from June 4-12. She will also be here as we celebrate World Oceans' Day on June 8. Tiger Exhibit Renovations
Tiger exhibit renovation is complete – and completely TIGER-RIFFIC! Eight-year-old Sumatran Tiger brothers Manis and Langka are kings in their new castle.Sniffing, marking, licking, and exploring, Manis and Langka, if they could, would be giving “high paws” to everyone for creating their new tiger paradise.
Situated in a hillside on Tiger Trail, the renovated area is five times larger than their previous home.Equipped with all the latest tiger home amenities like rock couches, grass shag carpet, a wading pool and a soothing waterfall, some could coin this as a Sumatran Spa.
The $600,000 renovation fits perfectly in the hillside along Tiger Trail allowing for a 500-square foot pond and depth and height for spectacular photo opportunites. Invisa-net will be used as the public/tiger barrier. This net is the latest tech material for animal containment that will allow photographers to focus through it for great photo memories.
Sea-sational Sea Lions
Last year the sea lion pool received a resurfaced pool and the pipes were updated. This spring a classy colorful shade structure was erected that towers above the pool. This structure is strategically placed to always provide patches of shade for the seas lions as the sun moves across the sky. Next, a new water flow filtration system will be installed. This system will provide enchanced water quality and conservation.
