The Polar Bear Returns to Kansas City Summer 2010!

Construction is ongoing for the $10 million Polar Bear project – thanks in large part to the Kansas City, Missouri voters who passed a bond package in 2004 to bring these large white bears back to our city.

Working in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquarium Species Survival Program, a nearly-600 pound, two-and-a-half-year-old male polar bear from the Toledo Zoo will be the "star" of the Zoo’s new awesome arctic adventure opening Summer 2010.

With multiple indoor and outdoor viewing angles, recreated glaciers, and a 140,000 gallon pool guests will admire these magnificent northern species through 2.25 inch thick glass windows.

Polar bear habitat is quickly shrinking, threatening the survival of this glorious species. Kansas City Zoo Keeper Rebecca Prewitt recently traveled to the tundra to learn how we can help preserve the polar bears' habitat. Read about her journey and what you can do to make a difference.

Learn about Polar Bear Conservation!
Approaching our first Polar BearExperience a day in the life of a Kansas City Zoo Keeper. Rebecca Prewitt recently spent a week learning about Polar Bears and climate change at the Zoo Keeper Leadership Camp hosted by Polar Bears International (PBI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the worldwide conservation of Polar Bears through research and education.

She traveled to the bear's natural habitat in the arctic tundra near the famous Polar Bear capitol of the world,
Churchill, Manitoba to experience these majestic creatures and learn what we can do to save them.

Read her journal entries and see the photos she took during her life changing journey.
